Astronomy Short Courses

New for 2010!

Night-Sky Adventures!

A clear night sky is an oft overlooked wonder of the natural world. This course concentrates solely on ‘learning your way around the night sky’. We initially use simple charts of the night sky, and illustrate the idea that, with only a few ‘starting points’, it’s very easy to obtain a good clear knowledge of all the main objects that are visible throughout the year.

*Learn to identify the most important constellations; when and how to track down the planets; and the best ways to ‘view’ the night sky.

*The course is enhanced by the use of the Lawrence House Planetarium – a ‘guaranteed clear night sky’ at any time of the year - and a visual treat.

This is a short-course, run over two consecutive evenings, each tutorial running between 7pm and 9:30pm.

A perfect introduction to the World of Astronomy and the sky at night.

Atomic!

Atoms are fascinating. Their elementary structure makes them immensely important within the science of Astronomy. This academic short-course introduces the nature of the Atom, and illustrates how nature’s most fundamental building-blocks – atoms, ions and molecules – help to explain so much that is deep-seated and underlying within all science disciplines.

*Tutorial 1: Introducing the Atom; Structure and Form; Atomic Number and the Periodic Table; ions and molecules.

*Tutorial 2: Bonding and chemistry; Spectroscopy in Astronomy; ‘Atoms in Space’ - an example in nature of the very small ultimately controlling the very large. . .

Tutorials on two consecutive weeks, running between 7pm and 9pm.

Price: £45 per head
