Astronomy GCSE

Astronomy is a very ‘rare’ GCSE, allowing you to study this wonderful subject, full of incredible facts and fantastic science and gain a recognized qualification. The course will take place over 2 years and upon completion you will be eligible to move on to further qualifications including advanced astronomy courses that will help you to study for an astronomy degree at the Open University.

You will learn about:

  • Our ‘home’, the Earth, and it’s place within the Universe
  • The Moon and the Sun, and their influence upon our planet
  • The planets in our Solar System
  • Stars and Galaxies – the life and structure of the stars. Constellations, and the night sky!
  • Observing Techniques – how we study the Universe!

The course timetable amounts to a weekly, two-hour lesson, spread over eighteen months, with the final exam in the summer of 2011. This will be supplemented by occasional additional study periods, including practical observation sessions.

This year's tutorial dates are:

Commencing Thursday 21st January 2010
6.00 - 7.30 pm

Then:
Every Thursday until 11th Feb inclusive
.
Then:
Every Thursday from 25th Feb to 25th Mar inclusive
.
Then:
Every Thursday from 22nd April until 27th May inclusive
.
Then:
Every Thursday from 10th June until 8th July inclusive

Total = 20 tutorials until the summer break
50 tutorials over the whole course

At the end of the course, your knowledge of astronomy will be tested in an exam. This exam will be worth a maximum of 75% towards your Astronomy GCSE.

Up to a further 25% is earned through coursework practical astronomy - you will undertake:

  • Observations of the night sky
  • Graphical/computational/constructional work regarding the stars and the planets

    The fee for the full course is £520 plus approx £28 for the exam entrance fee.  This amounts to about £6 per hour that you are taught.  All fees can be ‘spread’ to your convenience - termly, monthly, weekly, but there is an initial payment of £60, to be paid on or before Monday 4th Jan 2010  - this will confirm your place on the course.
