BBC STARGAZING LIVE COMES TO FYLDE COAST

Would-be astronomers on the Fylde Coast will get a chance to join the BBC’s highly successful ‘Stargazing Live’ in the New Year, when one of the broadcaster’s North West satellite events comes from Rossall's historic campus, on Wednesday 18th January 2012.

Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and astronomer in residence at Rossall’s Lawrence House Astronomy & Space Science Centre, Dr Nick Lister, will steer star gazers through the universe as he takes members of the public on a tour of the night sky, stars and Solar System, and BBC Radio Lancashire will broadcast live from the venue to make it a truly interactive experience.

Tickets, which are free for the two ‘Stargazing Live’ sessions, are available for the general public online at www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtours/events .

Sessions will take place at 5.30pm – 7.00pm and 8.00pm – 9.30pm in ‘Big School’, within Rossall School’s main square, and will involve entertaining indoor presentations and some exploration of the night sky with the naked eye.

Dr Nick Lister, 40, is one of the rising stars of UK astronomy and is known for his entertaining and enthusiastic presentation of all things planetary. He became head of Lawrence House Astronomy & Space Science Centre in 2004 and since then has used the Centre’s planetarium, and its restored Edwardian observatory to open up the universe to thousands of people from across the North of England.

Commenting on the Centre’s involvement in the BBC event, Nick Lister said: “Some people pay thousands of pounds to travel see the Earth’s natural wonders, yet the night sky is perhaps the most awe-inspiring of all and it’s absolutely free, so with the BBC, we’ll be encouraging and helping more people to find their way around the night sky with the naked eye. Once they know what they’re looking at I guarantee they’ll appreciate the beauty of it, even without telescopes and costly equipment.”
