Pastoral Care

We are very proud of our significant reputation for the high quality of pastoral care here at Rossall. As a boarder you will be cared for by your Houseparent(s) and their family. Under their expert care you will be encouraged to develop academically, socially and in all aspects of their extracurricular life. Each Boarding House is further strengthened by a Deputy Houseparent and a team of tutors, who share the responsibility of caring for pupils and take an active interest in all that they undertake, individually or as a community.

The Houseparents report to the Senior Teacher Pastoral for the wellbeing of all pupils in their house, both boarding and day. Monthly meetings are held with Houseparents to coordinate policy and to share best practice across the House system.

While there are clear rules of behavior in the Houses, corridors are characterized by an easy familiarity, and comfort. Boarding Houses are first and foremost a place of friendship. Every effort is made to create a suitable pupil balance in each House in terms of age and interests.

What to do if you have a problem

Whatever the issue is – big or small. by discussing it, you may come up with some positive ideas. You can talk to your Housparent, the Senior Teacher Pastoral, the Headmaster, the Deputy Head, Chaplain or any member of staff. They will always listen and try to understand. Even if you find the issue hurtful or embarrassing, don't worry - it will only be discussed by staff who can help you. You can seek help by yourself oor as part of a group, or through your parents.

If possible, the staff member will try and resolve your problem in person. If not, he or she will go on your behalf to someone who can help. If you still feel unhappy or need further advice and support, you can always contact the School's Independent Listener (details available in the Boarding Houses) or CSCI (Commission for Social Care Inspection) - via their website www.csci.org.uk or by telephoning 0845 015 0120 (national).

REMEMBER PROBLEMS ARE RARE AND A PROBLEM SHARED IS A PROBLEM SOLVED!

What to do if you feel unwell.

If you are unwell you must tell the House Staff or if during the day, the School Nurse. If they think it is appropriate an appointment will be made with the doctor and parents are contacted. If you are too ill to attend lessons, you can go to the Medical Centre on campus or remain in the boarding house if necessary.

Homesickness

Everyone, whatever their age will miss home and family. There are opportunities to go home at weekends to your family or Guardians, as well as half-term breaks. Remember, everyone knows what it is like to be homesick, so talk about your feelings to both staff and your friends. Homesickness does not last forever, many pupils find they are missing school in the holidays after a few terms!
