House Master's statement
Lugard aims to provide a supportive and disciplined boarding environment, in which boys feel happy, secure and valued. They are encouraged to strive for, and achieve, high standards relative to their ability in the academic work place and to develop excellent work habits, personal organisation and social skills, all essential to School and later life. Boys come to Lugard from many different countries and are expected to add to the rich multi-cultural life of the House and the International Study Centre here in Rossall.
The House Master, Deputies, Tutors and Matron provide a huge amount of personal support for each of the boys’ needs, whilst also having high expectations of the behaviour, appearance and manners of all boys in the House.
Since the house is a house of non-native speakers, English is crucial in this multinational house and a subject that fascinates me. It is crucial for positioning ourselves in the world and therefore, as stated in the National Curriculum, language should be an entitlement. 'In order to participate confidently in public, cultural and working life, pupils need to be able to speak, write and read... fluently'.
I too, believe in the very definite role played by actively directed learning and thus, the radical significance of education. Bakhtin made 'the revolutionary decision that tutoring was a necessary aspect of a student's journey to a ground of higher consciousness', because he understood that 'thought is inner speech', and therefore, 'learning to talk is really learning to think.'
This is the message I give to the boys.
