A* Rating for Rossall Results
We topped last year’s Lancashire league tables for GCSE, and now, Rossall School has improved on the 2009 A-level results with percentage increases across the board, and a number of students achieving the newly introduced top A* grade.
The School’s pass rates this year A* - E show a two percent increase to 93%, whilst A* - B grades of 67% indicate a rise of four percent over the previous A – B grades. In addition, 7% of Rossall students achieved the higher A* grade in its introductory year.
The results are seen as a significant, given Rossall’s non-selective policy, which encourages students of all abilities to sit the examinations of their choice. This is in stark contrast to many schools in the state and independent sector whose selective policies result in students being cherry-picked to take only the subjects in which they have a strong chance of success.
Commenting on this year’s success, Deputy headmaster, Anton Maree, praised the work of students and said: “We are all delighted with the excellent results achieved by our A-level students. Our overall pass rate has improved and it is clear that new strategies are already having an effect upon academic achievement. The results are even more impressive when one takes into account that we are a non-selective school and that our students, excelling at art, drama, music and sport, all lead busy lives.
“The results confirm the hard work and ability of both students and teachers and endorse the recent Independent Schools’ Inspectorate report which pointed out that teaching was good overall and sometimes exceptional and that students spoke enthusiastically about the support they received.”
One Rossall student with stars in his eyes is Joe Ingham, who has been offered a place at Oxford after gaining four top A* grades in History, English Literature, Art and Religious Studies. However, despite the lure of the dreaming spires, the 18-year-old student from Fleetwood is unsure about which degree course to take, so is likely to take a year out before taking up his Oxford place and could even return to Rossall for a year as a member of the School’s administrative staff. Said Joe: “I’m thrilled with the top grades, and my parents are also delighted. It’s great to be offered a place at Oxford, but to be honest the significance of it hasn’t really sunk in yet.
"I’ll be celebrating with most of my school friends tonight, so I’m sure it will hit me tomorrow, when I can at least start to plan what I want to do next.”
Other Rossall students celebrating included Nicola Blythe, 18, who was rendered speechless by her two A’s in Biology and Chemistry and a B in Maths, which have enabled her to gain a place at Leeds University, where she’ll study Human Physiology. The normally chatty Cleveleys teenager was lost for words when she saw her grades, because she’d been expecting the worst for her Maths result, but is “Absolutely overjoyed” to have gained the passes to help fulfil her dream of a career in medicine. Joining her at Leeds will be Singleton student, Daniel Stone, 18, whose three B grades in Maths, Physics and Biology are enough to enable him to study medicinal chemistry with a view to a career in Pharmacology. The all-round sportsman and member of Rossall’s hockey, rugby and cricket teams missed out on ‘A’ grades by only one point, yet he’s still delighted with the outcome. He commented: “I hear people say that A-levels are easy, but they’re not, and this year’s A* grade introduction has made them a little tougher, so I’m really pleased to have achieved enough to get my place in Yorkshire.
“Lots of my friends here have gained good grades, so I think the whole sixth form has done really well this year and we’ll all be celebrating in style tonight with a trip to a club and a champagne toast.”
