Rossall Infants achieve IBO World School status

IB World School

Rossall pupils enjoy the PYP programme

Nursery, Infant and Junior Schools are awarded IBO World School Status

Following a very successful IBO (International Baccalaureate Organisation) inspection, Rossall Junior, Infant and Nursery School is proud to announce that it is now an IBO World School and fully authorised to teach the Primary Years Programme, the first independent school in the North of England.

.

What is the Primary Years Programme?

The PYP provides an international curriculum that meets the needs of young learners between the ages of 3 and 11. We believe everyone at Rossall to be life long learners and we are preparing our children to face the fast changing world and enabling them to connect their learning to real life situations.

.

Our children are encouraged to be inquisitive, ask questions, explore and interact with their environment.

.

The programme is built around the children engaging in half termly Units of Inquiry where they are able to make connection in their learning across the curriculum and between subject disciplines.

.

At the heart of the programme lies the Pupil Learner Profile; which encourages the children to be inquirers, communicators, open-minded and reflective. It provides them with confidence, empathy and independence as well as giving them the life-long skills of self-management, research and communication.

.

The IBO were delighted with Rossall’s teaching and the progress the children are making under the programme. It is truly a curriculum for tomorrow’s child and Rossall Junior, Infants and Nursery are clearly providing this as the outstanding inspection report bore testament to. The report praised the outstanding pastoral care the children receive in their formative years. We are first and foremost a place of learning where the curriculum challenges the children to strive for personal standards of excellence and to reach their full potential.

Rainbow Fish production

Rainbow Fish Play
March 2010.

On Friday 12th March the Blunderbus Theatre Company visited our Nursery and Infant School to perform a musical adaptation of the popular children’s book by Marcus Pfister.

.

The Rainbow Fish, with her shimmering scales, is the most beautiful fish in the ocean. But, she is proud and vain, and none of the other fish want to be her friend, - until she learns to give away some of her most prized possessions. Our very own Daniel Schofield took part in the performance as a willing volunteer.

.

Each child managed to collect a shimmering scale from the Rainbow Fish to take home as a reminder. The children (and staff!) loved the performance and are already looking forward to their visit back to Rossall next year.

Unicef Change for Change Day
Pyjamas in School!

UNICEF Day For Change has been set up to support children’s welfare and education in developing countries. This years chosen country is Mozambique.  However, half of the money we raise will also be sent to help children in Haiti, recovering from the devastating earthquake.

.

Every day in Mozambique, about 400 children under the age five die, mainly of preventable causes. One in two children lack safe drinking water and around one in three girls do not get the chance to attend primary school. UNICEF is changing children’s lives in Mozambique, but we need your help to do more. And we have all seen the terrible scenes in the wake of the Haiti earthquake.

.

As you can see from all the photos , we had great fun supporting UNICEF’s ‘Day for Change’ on Friday. This important arm of UNICEF’s work is this year supporting projects in Mozambique. However, we also felt some of the money we raised should support the relief work and the victims of the recent Haiti earthquake. When we asked the children what aspect of the school day they would like to ‘change’, their unanimous idea was a ‘pyjama day’!

.

Everyone entered into the spirit (including all the staff) and we enjoyed hot chocolate at break and a cake sale. Annabelle (Y5) also made and sold stickers to raise further money for the charity. Thanks to everyone’s generous support we will be able to send UNICEF a cheque for just over £400—a fantastic achievementso well done!

Rossall Infants enjoy learing about the Buddhist faith when visited by Kelsang Thaye a Buddhist nun

Infants Learn about Buddhist Faith

The Infants were  visited by Kelsang Thaye, a Buddhist nun from the Blackpool Keajara Buddhist centre. She talked to the children about buddhist traditions and aspects of the Buddhist faith,  and demonstrated how she sets up her shrine before leading them through a guided meditation. The children asked lots of questions  connected to their PYP Units of Inquiry on Celebrations and Clothing.

.

It was a super opportunity for the children to experience aspects of another culture and faith within their own environment.
.
All the children were fascinated by the Buddhist shrine and how offerings were made , but they all later agreed that they found the meditation quite difficult as they had to sit still for some time! Later on in the term, some of the children will be visiting a synagogue and joining in with preparations for a Victorian Christmas in Lancaster.
Edward and Charlie with Mrs Hallam from the NSPCC

Rossall Infants raise funds for NSPCC

Our head boy Edward and Head Girl Charlie presented a cheque to Mrs. Nancy Hallam from the NSPCC. Mrs Hallam knows us well at Rossall, as she used to be our Infant Headmistress before retiring several years ago.

.

She explained to the children about  the importance of the work of the NSPCC in helping less fortunate children.

.

The money was raised from ticket sales for Space Heroes, last term's play.

Friendship Cake

During our Wednesday assembly the Infants made a friendship cake. We all thought very hard about what was needed to make a friendship last. Then we added the extra special ingredients and all stirred the cake mixture adding our suggestions as we stirred. We all ate the cakes on Thursday. This means that we will all be friends forever!!!

These are the things to add to your cake mix if you want to make one at home!

  • giggles and laughs
  • smiles
  • holding hands and hugs

French Day

The Infant and Nursery children held a French Day, we all came to school dressed in red, white and blue. We sang French songs, learnt some French words  and had a French buffet! The children all enjoyed tasting croissants, baguettes, pain au chocolat and French cheeses.

.

As part of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years programme we look at the wider world and learn about life in other countries.
