Maths Challenge 2009

Daniel Liu, Georgina Barry, James Gregory, and Hazal Kurtcu: Northern Champions in the Maths Challeng

Rossall Maths Challengers

This is a national competition essentially for Y11 and Y10, but we entered  our top set in Year Nine, and Daniel Liu from that class, duly achieved the school's joint top score of 92. Furthermore, Hazal Kurtcu in Year 10 also beat all our Year 11s. Four pupils have qualified for the follow up round, which takes place on Thursday 19 March.

Following on from his success in the Senior Maths Challenge, Nguyen Hieu Trong (U6 IB) competed in the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 and 2. He is the first Rossallian, to my knowledge, to qualify for the second round of this Olympiad. About 250,000 pupils undertake the Senior Maths Challenge and these are gradually reduced by these follow-up rounds. Hieu finished joint 13th in the whole country, which can be seen by visiting www.ukmt.org.uk and clicking on the British Mathematical Olympiad link. Suffice to say, he is a remarkable mathematician.

The Fab 4

On Friday, the Team Maths Challenge will take place at Arnold. About 30 schools will be represented by teams of 4 pupils, with a maximum of 2 from year nine. Most schools have 2 year 9s and 2 year 8s, but ours has 2 year 9s and 2 year 7s.

Our fab four are Daniel Liu and "Win" Nguyen from Year 9, and James Smith and Dylan Jordan from Year 7. This is the Regional Final and we won the corresponding event last year, before competing in the National Final in London.  We are a little weaker this year, but with Daniel in the Team, anything is possible. You can find out more from the UKMT website at www.ukmt.org.uk and click on team challenge.

On Thursday 19th, are the follow-up rounds for the Intermediate Maths Challenge. Those who did well in that tournament will compete with the top 400 from the 200,000 who sat the Intermediate Maths Challenge. Daniel (again) and Hazal Kurtcu (year 10) beat all the year 11s and are qualifiers for this Olympiad. They take a 2 hour written paper.
