Rossall beat Sedbergh, Bolton School and local rival KEQMS
Wednesday 25th January
Rossall U14s took on local rivals KEQMS older opponents U15s and despite the game being cut to 45 minutes, Rossall were able to secure a very comfortable 6-2 victory. David Trapnell scored two goals but 16 boys played in the game emphasising Rossall's depth. Sam Braidford, James Boyd, Charlie Roberts and Jonny Lee were the other scorers. The Under 14s are progressing impressively and are hoping to retain the North of England title this year.
Saturday 28th January
Rossall's senior squads travelled to Sedbergh knowing that they would be facing tough opposition after close encounters in previous years. Despite this, the 2nd XI were in confident mood, having defeated Bolton Boys School 1st XI 2-0 earlier in the week with an impressive performance led by their captain Jake Jordan.
Their confidence was justified with goalkeeper Tom Gregory only touching the ball once in a comprehensive 3-0 victory. The highlight was a solo goal by Frazer Forster who dribbled past three players before flicking the ball high into the Sedbergh goal.
The Under 14s dominated Sedbergh with an 8-0 victory in a game cut short by 15 mins. David Trapnell scored three goals after a dominant performance by a potential future England Hockey player Sam Braidford. Rossall Under 15s also defeated Sedbergh comfortably with Oliver Hughes completing a 5-1 victory against stubborn opponents.
Thankfully Rossall were able to secure another victory against a determined and skilful Sedbergh 1st XI with a 2-1 victory. Despite losing 1-0 at half time the boys remained calmed and switched to a more attacking formation. With Keenan Quill and Matthew Smith dominant in midfield, Rossall scored 2 goals by Alex Gerstel. The scoreline did not reflect Rossall's dominance whose goalkeeper only had one save to make all match. Unfortunately a series of short corners and missed chances highlighted unusually abject performances by Rossall's strikers. Despite this, the boys look forward to the return of four starting players and clinched their 14th victory this season.

ROSSALL RETAIN LANCASHIRE TITLES
U14s - Under 18s!
Another impressive week for Rossall Hockey with all three teams winning the Lancashire Cup and each team recording victories against strong opposition. The Under 14s secured the title with a dominating 5-1 victory against Manchester Grammar School, the Under 16s won a thrilling encounter with a last minute goal from Tom Morrison to win 5-4 and the Under 18s secured both the Lancashire Cup and League Title with 12 conclusive victories, including a 17-0 victory against Manchester Grammar School last term. The Under 13s will also be hoping to retain the Lancashire Cup later in the term.
The 1st XI have made an excellent start to the term, following the indoor National Finals. After their 5-1 defeat of Watford Grammar School which cemented Rossall's reputation as one of the best teams in the country, Rossall faced North of England Champions King's Chester and unbeaten Denstone College from the Midlands. On Wednesday the boys dominated King's Chester and secured a 5-3 victory against a talented King's Chester side. King's Chester opened the scoring and were confident of victory. Particularly after their impressive season, which have included ten wins and a 16-0 victory. However, Rossall quickly replied with 2 well taken Jack Bradley goals and a fine strike by Dale Fisher to lead 3-1 at half time. Although King's Chester scored two goals in the second half, Rossall eased to victory with goals from Jack Morrison and Felix Bose. Although it was a rusty performance after the Christmas break, Rossall played some wonderful hockey and should have won by a greater margin against a determined opponent.
On Saturday Rossall played a strong Denstone College team coached by Olympic gold medallist Imran Shiawi. Denstone who had travelled 3 hours to play on the Fylde Coast had 2 England players and a number of impressive Germans. Both teams were also unbeaten before the game, with Rossall winning 13/13 games including the victory against North of England Champions King's Chester on Wednesday. Despite this, Rossall dominated possession throughout the game, although they failed to create many chances against a well organised team. Denstone defended from the half way line throughout the game, allowed little room for Rossall in attack. Although a great compliment to Rossall, it frustrated the forwards who were unable to score in the first half against a team relying on creating chances on the counter attack. The tactic appeared to be working when Denstone took the lead with one of their few attacks on the break. It was a well taken goal and Rossall seemed to losing control of the game. With injuries to Key players Charlie Andrews, William Parker and central midfielder Milan Weber the boys responded with great determination and scored a splendid goal in the top corner by Felix Bose. Despite several short corner appeals the boys could not find the winner and game ended 1-1 with Rossall firmly encamped in the Denstone half. The standard of Hockey was outstanding throughout, although Rossall remained frustrated by Denstone negative but effective half court press. Denstone were happy to hold on to a draw in a highly competitive match. Unbeaten Rossall travel to Sedbergh this weekend with great confidence despite injuries to three of their starting XI.
In other fixtures this week, Rossall Under 14s warmed up for their regional tournament with a splendid 2-0 victory against Merchant Taylors Crosby on Saturday. Goals by Charlie Roberts and the skillful Danny Evans led them to a good victory against their spirited opponents. The Under 15s also won 1-0 but were disappointed with the scoreline in a game they dominated. The Rossall goalkeeper hardly touched the ball the boys were left frustrated by a number of near misses. Thankfully the Under 16s on Wednesday were able to score 5 goals and retained the Lancashire cup. The future remains bright at Rossall too. The under 12s defeated Denstone College 1-0 at both A and B team level. An impressive result after their long Journey to Staffordshire. Although the Under 13s lost to Denstone College they defeated Malsis School, the reigning North of England Under 13 champions 5-1 on Wednesday. A splendid week for Rossall Hockey! All of Rossall teams secured victories and Rossall retained all three Lancashire trophies for the third year in a row.

Successes
Rugby trials for Asa!
17 year old Rossall pupil, Asa Watson from Fleetwood has made it through to trials for the North England 18’s Rugby team.
Having played five seasons for local team Fleetwood, two seasons for Lancashire county and also the National Under 18 Independent Schools Barbarians Squad last year, Asa attended trials for the Northern team and although he didn’t make the final squad he has been informed that he could still be called up in case of injuries. This places Asa in the top 8 Prop Forwards for the whole of the North of England! For the time being Asa will continue to play for his county and will hopefully get another chance to play for North England in the future.
........................................................................................................................
15 year old Dylan Jordan will be training with the U16 Penine Pumas Hockey squad in Leeds. This team is the best 15 players in the North of England and will hopefully lead to Rossall's Junior Captain earning selection for the England Under 16 team. Dylan successfully Captain Rossall's Under 14s to the North of England title and the National Finals last year.
Matthew Smith has also earned selection for U18 Penine Pumas North of England team and will have an excellent chance of playing for England U18s, having trained with the squad at Lougborough University last year. The Preston born midfielder has been in fine form and has captained Rossall to 7-0, 8-0 and 12-0 victories in the Lancashire league and cup this season. William Parker is close to regional selection too and has been a key player for the North West team.

Rossall girls selected for Lancashire
Rossall students Sophie Morley and Hayley Hughes are celebrating their achievement having been selected for the Lancashire Netball team.
.
Friends Hayley and Sophie both play for Blackpool Netball Club: 14 year old Fleetwood girl Sophie excels in her goal shooter/goal attack role and team selectors were so impressed they placed her in the under 16s two years in advance and her younger counterpart Hayley plays goal defence for the Blackpool Under 15s and is now playing for Lancashire U14s.
.
As well as training for Blackpool weekly, the girls are expected at county training sessions and tournaments throughout the year.
.
Proud Dad, Mr Morley says “it’s a wonderful achievement for both girls and we are extremely proud. Training will be tough but both girls are dedicated to their love of Netball and their modesty is admirable.”

Girls Hockey
Saturday 15th October
Rossall 1st XI Girls vs KEQMS
.
Rossall started strong but KEQMS opened the scoring from a short corner. Rossall fought back and with great interlinking play between the midfield and forwards. Dani Waistle deflected a ball from Lauren Harkness to equalise. Rossall kept the pressure with good play but could not convert the pressure into goals. A lapse in concentration let KEQMS score 2 easy goals. Rossall started slow out of the blocks and with poor defending KEQMS scored 2 goals. Rossall picked up the pace and managed to control part of the game. Rossall took a goal back with a well placed shot from Sophie Hockings. Player of the match: Tatiana Parades Celes. Final Score KEQMS 6 - Rossall 2
U15 won 3-2
U13 lost 5-0
U12 Lost 6-1 Goalscorer: Jessica Braidford.
Player of the match: Megan Finney

Lashings
During the Summer Rossall hosted one of the biggest cricket matches: our 1st XI met world famous team Lashings XI, made up of professional cricketers including the likes of Devon Malcolm, Inzamam Ul-Haq, Saqlain Mushtaq and Lou Vincent to name but a few.
.
The Rossall boys gave the professionals a tough challenge, splendid bowling from Luke Williams saw them lose a wicket early but as we finished on 165 we couldn’t quite beat them.
.
Congratulations to Luke Williams who achieved 75 runs not out.

Basketball
International and increasingly British Rossallians are showing interest in basketball as a fast growing sport here at Rossall.
.
Girls are also breaking onto the scene and a second year of girls basketball beckons. Mr Carter is delighted with the application and competition for places in the teams are fiercer than he can ever remember.
.
After a very successful U16 season where we were almost unbeaten and picked up the Wyre Cup as reward, we have now developed into a new phase where we have now U16 and U19 teams who are competing at the highest level and very proud to represent our school.

Boys' Hockey 2010 -2011
2010 - 2011 was Rossall's most successful season with a record of 10 trophies. The Under 13s won the Lancashire, North West, North of England runners up title and reached the national semi final.
.
The Under 12s and 13s scored over a 100 goals with boys such as Sam Braidford being tipped for national honours by Old Rossallian and England coach John Bell. A fine 4-1 victory against Ipswich School to reach the semi Finals highlighted their progress this year. The under 14s also reached the national finals and finished sixth in the country. They secured the Lancashire, North West and North of England title by scoring 46 goals and conceding two goals. Although they were defeated by Whitgift School both the Under 13s and 14s have the potential to become national champions in the future. The Under 14s best performance being a 3-1 defeat of West of England Champions Millfield School. Both the Under 12s and under 14s remained undefeated throughout the year in school fixtures, often winning games by huge margins. The under 13s were only defeated by national winners Whitgift and Malsis, a team they would finish above at the national finals.
.
The strength of Rossall's junior Hockey was highlighted by the visit of The UK under 13s team to Rossall to play a combined U13/14 team. Unfortunately the Ireland Captain helped a strong UK team unsurprisingly defeat Rossall 3-0.
The Under 15s had a mixed season but improved throughout the year. They won 9 games, drew 3 and lost 4. However, five of the team represented Lancashire and will become strong 1st XI players.
.
The U16s won the North West title with some excellent hockey and without conceding a goal in both the county and regional rounds. Unfortunately they were unable to secure the North of England title and a place at the national finals following a surprise 1-0 defeat at the North of England finals to a team they had previously defeated 4-0. This was frustrating as they are as good as any team in the country.
.
The 1st XI won the Lancashire League title comfortably and won 21 games during the season. They enjoyed impressive victories against Shrewsbury, The King's School Macclesfield, Giggleswick, Sedbergh and were able to secure a joint top finish at the Taunton School indoor Hockey tournament following victories against schools such as Belfast Grammar and Warwick School. The 1st XI were the strongest team Rossall have had in many years and should be aiming to reach the national finals for both indoor and outdoor hockey next season.
.
Over 40 boys were selected to represented their counties and six of the 1st XI earned selection for the regional team. The strength of the Boys' Hockey has led to John Bell, an OR visiting the school on many occasions to see if boys such as Dylan Jordan and Matthew Smith can earn selection for the national team. It has also led to some outstanding Hockey players from Germany applying to Rossall.

Rossall is Fifth Element in Bid for Olympic Gold
In the bid for Olympic gold in 2012 and 2016, Britain’s sporting hierarchy have been searching for an elusive fifth element…that special something to give them an edge over the competition…and with a bit of luck they appear to have uncovered it right here on the Fylde Coast.
.
The discovery of our terrific campus of 160 acres and its varied range of sports facilities have been pure gold for Pentathlon GB, the governing body for Britain’s Modern Pentathlon and it’s a find that could see Rossall eventually becoming a national centre of excellence for Pentathlon…and the Fylde Coast, a lure for Britain’s top athletes.
