The arts are an integral part of life at Rossall and a number of famous authors and musicians have studied here.
All of our pupils are encouraged to venture into the Rossall arts programmes to see what they can discover about themselves and others. Whether in music, visual art or design technology, our classes are rigorous and require focus, commitment, and discipline. In addition to providing solid technical instruction, our arts courses are also designed to stretch students' creative boundaries, to give them a sense of historical context, and to encourage a familiarity with the varied artistic traditions of the world.
Beyond the classroom, our pupils have many opportunities to explore the arts. Each year, the Theatre Society performs two main stage productions in various locations around the campus, the Middle School Drama club performs one main production each year and the Literary Society holds weekly events which explore the literature, film and food of different cultures, ages and places. Theatre trips are popular. There is an annual trip to Stratford as well as trips to the Grand Theatre, Blackpool, the Royal Exchange in Manchester and others.
Student music groups include brass, string, and wind ensembles, a chamber orchestra; the jazz band; two choirs and a gospel choir, as well as numerous student bands. Writers can join the Literary Society which meets weekly to write and discuss poetry and prose based on past ages or different cultures or they can contribute to the student publication ‘Waves’.
Rossaall is also fortunate to welcome to campus throughout the year authors, musicians, poets, and artists from all disciplines as visiting artists and guest lecturers.
To celebrate our love of the arts, we devote an entire week each year in the Lent Term to art, music and drama. This year Arts Week is from Friday 7th March - Saturday 15th March.
